Time out in the Allgäu

There is certainly no shortage of traditional accommodation in the Allgäu. But the Alpine Lodge is different. Anyone arriving in the 500-soul village of Scheffau, just under two hours from Munich, will encounter a rural idyll with cow bells and church bells.
But at the end of the village, just behind the church, detached with a far-reaching view of meadows and forests, a surprise awaits: a stylish design hotel with plenty of space for a few guests, a cozy feel-good atmosphere, a warming open fire, creative cuisine and a host couple who give us a warm welcome. Especially in times of Corona, you want to keep such a gem as an insider tip. But because we sincerely wish Hamburgers Anja Engelke and Michael Schott success in their adopted Bavarian home, we are happy to reveal here what makes the time out in their Alpine lodge so special. First of all, there is not one, but nine Alpine lodges hidden behind the shingle-roofed façade of the old school building.

Each one is generously designed and furnished with designer furniture from the 1930s. There are also velvet-covered lounge chairs, beds from the Schramm manufactory, Berker light switches in Bauhaus style, old school blackboards reminiscent of the building's history, natural materials and lovingly selected, high-quality details. The sociologist and the advertising photographer spent around three years lovingly planning and designing every detail until they opened their alpine lodge in spring 2019, thus realizing their vision: a boutique hotel with design appeal for individualists.

A box seat for people with eyes. A retreat with plenty of space for those seeking peace and quiet. With moments of happiness for pleasure-seekers: The informal, cultivated and warm atmosphere is just as much a part of this as the natural 'Du' as a form of address, the delicious food in the dining and living room and in the conservatory, where the necessary distance is maintained and guests nevertheless strike up conversations surprisingly quickly. The panoramic view of the picture-book landscape is also inspiring, whether from the sauna in the basement or the attic suite on the roof. The day begins with a corona-compliant breakfast on an etagere. There is no better way to start a day in the Allgäu.
