The Azores
Enjoying a carefree vacation is the best time of the year for a reason. After all, you want to experience something unique far away from the worries of everyday life and enjoy a carefree time. The Azores have always been remote and therefore an insider tip. In the recent past, however, the archipelago has also scored highly in terms of safety. It is considered one of the safest travel destinations during the pandemic and has been officially recognized for this by European Best Destinations.
In addition to a comprehensive RT-PCR test screening program, the Azores impress with low case numbers and endless opportunities for social distancing. The Safe and Clean seal was created so that it is clear from afar how strongly individual businesses adhere to the government's guidelines. Corvo, the smallest of the islands, is also the first region in Europe with herd immunity. Over 95 percent of the adult population has already been vaccinated twice. A clear conscience in your luggage
In the Azores, the government, tourism industry and local communities are working side by side to preserve the beautiful islands, their culture and the ecosystem - on land and in the water. For this commitment, the Azores were the first archipelago to be awarded the Earth Check certificate for sustainable tourism. The consultancy Earth Check has been helping governments, communities and companies in the travel and tourism sector to make their offerings sustainable since 1987. Earth Check only awards its sustainability certificate if the strict Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are demonstrably achieved based on scientific data.
In order to continue to protect the breathtaking nature in the future, the entire land area of the islands and over 10,000 square kilometers of the surrounding sea area were defined as a geopark. This has been a member of the Global Geoparks Network since 2013 and a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2015. The city center of Angra do Heroísmo on the island of Terceira and the wine-growing landscape on Pico are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
