Hong Kong The City of Art

The diverse art scene is worth a trip in itself.

If you love art, Hong Kong is a land of milk and honey. The Asian metropolis is a true Eldorado for anyone who wants to experience exciting events and get to know the works of local and international artists. You should definitely visit the West Kowloon Cultural District. Here, the city has created a vibrant platform for young, up-and-coming and established artists - a place where people from different backgrounds come together to experiment, create, participate and be inspired. The fascinating Victoria Harbour neighborhood hosts imaginative exhibitions, performances and other world-class cultural events. The latest highlight is the 30,500 m² Hong Kong Palace Museum, which will include two exhibition halls, event spaces, a 400-seat theater, a souvenir store and a restaurant. It will display artifacts from the Beijing Palace Museum, some of which have never been on public display before.

Another hotspot is the M+ Museum, which opened in November 2021 and has made diversity, equality and access to art of all kinds its mission from the outset. "M+ certainly has the potential to become the largest visual culture museum in Asia. It best expresses where we should be going as a world culture," says Jacques Meuron from the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, which is responsible for the innovative design of the building. The M+ collections focus on the visual culture of the 20th and 21st centuries and encompass the disciplines of design and architecture as well as the moving image. Performance art by Taiwanese artist Tehching Hsieh, who lives in New York, meets works by Candice Breitz and graffiti by Tsang Tsou Choi, the "King of Kowloon". Currently on display: the interactive exhibition "Touch for luck", a fish pond staged on the M+ façade, which is connected to users' cell phones and enables them to connect with other users.

But art lovers should also not miss the Tai Kwun in central Hong Kong: The former police station hosts cultural events, including the group exhibition emo gym, which brings together works by seven up-and-coming artists from Hong Kong. Tai Kwun is also home to the HK Arts Festival, which offers a varied program from a wide range of art disciplines. The PMQ on Aberdeen Street is the perfect place to experience Hong Kong's local craft culture. Once founded as a school, the historic building now houses a creative center with design studios offering a wide range of products such as fashion, accessories and other lifestyle products.
