Ischgl, Tyrol

Ischgl is looking at everyone: Austria's most modern and innovative ski resort shows how to create a harmonious combination of maximum guest comfort, forward-looking climate protection and contemporary health concepts.

Ischgl is located in the Paznaun winter sports region in the west of Tyrol and is the center of one of the largest interconnected ski areas in the Alps. 239 snow-sure, cross-border kilometers of pistes attract sports enthusiasts, while many freeriders and powder lovers have chosen the magnificent mountain region with its untouched deep snow runs as their favorite. The area is located at an altitude of over 2,000 meters and is therefore particularly snow-sure: winter sports enthusiasts will find ideal conditions from the end of November to the beginning of May.

At the same time, gourmets and connoisseurs are drawn to the picturesque village, which boasts the highest density of luxury hotels and nine award-winning restaurants in Austria. All this brings a lot of life to the community of 1,617 souls, but also a lot of responsibility. A lot is being done in Ischgl to live up to this responsibility. For example, great attention is paid to ensuring that winter sports and a love of nature form a happy symbiosis. Since the 2019/20 winter season, Silvrettaseilbahn AG has been offsetting all unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions caused by ongoing skiing and catering operations via an internationally recognized climate protection project in Peru. In other words: the ski resort is climate-neutral.

In addition, there is the commitment in the region: as part of a nature conservation project, reforestation in the protective forest is being supported with around 10,000 climate-friendly Swiss stone pine and larch trees. Anyone who wants to protect nature by practicing gentle sports such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or paragliding will find the perfect opportunities to do so in Ischgl. Despite all the climate awareness in Ischgl, there is no need to do without state-of-the-art comfort: Just last year, the Velilleckbahn (F1) was replaced by a modern six-seater chairlift with heated seats - and the four-seater Visnitzbahn (N2) by an eight-seater chairlift with heated seats and weather protection hoods. The four-seater Gampen E4 chairlift had already been replaced by a six-seater chairlift the year before.

Innovative concepts are also used when it comes to ensuring the health and safety of guests, employees and locals in the best possible way. The decision-makers in the Tyrolean Paznaun have developed a multi-layered package of measures for the 2020/21 winter season that goes far beyond official requirements. Cold fogging devices are used in cable car cabins etc. to eliminate 99.99% of viruses, bacteria and spores. Guests can volunteer to be tested at the local screening station. And ongoing wastewater monitoring contributes to the early detection of potential infections.

Ischgl has been rewarded for its efforts - for example with the Snowplaza Awards for "Best Ski Resort 2020" and "Best Ski Resort in Austria". The Silvretta Arena was also the 2020 test winner in the categories "5-star ski resort" and "snow reliability" at skiresort.de, the world's largest test portal for ski resorts. And as Skiarena Test Winner 2020, there was double gold in the categories "Slope grooming", "Test Winner Austria" and "Most popular mountain restaurant", gold for "Snowmaking Trophy" and "Slope groomer Trophy", awards for "Friendliest ticket office team" and the "Art Trophy".
