The capital of the small emirate is identical to the largest sub-region, which stretches for 16 kilometers along the Gulf coast. It covers 148 square kilometers of mostly flat sandy soil. The area is completely enclosed on the land side by the Emirate of Sharjah.

Around 95 per cent of all emirate residents live in the up-and-coming city - and the trend is still rising, as growth is planned and desired due to a number of tourist urbanizations.

The direct proximity to the city of Sharjah and the limited opportunities for expansion into the hinterland have led to extensive structural integration with the larger neighboring emirate over the years.
