New Wave, New Luxury

Explora Journeys is reinventing the cruise experience—and in the process, throwing long-standing “dream ship” clichés overboard. Instead, it focuses on casual ultra-luxury and the flair of glamorous boutique hotels.

Perhaps the most exhilarating hotel on earth is not ensconced in the heart of London or Paris, nor nestled in the Swiss Alps or on a idyllic beach in the Indian Ocean. Instead, it may well be gliding across the Atlantic at this very moment, or cruising through the Mediterranean… Explora Journeys places precisely this notion at the core of its new advertising campaign: What if the world’s most coveted destination no longer had a fixed address, but was instead constantly voyaging across the globe? That is precisely the vision behind Explora Journeys’ latest advertising campaign: the two flagships of the MSC Group’s luxury travel brand—which is many things, but certainly not a conventional cruise line—are instead defined as floating 5-star boutique hotels. This distinction is not merely a marketing ploy; it is an innovative concept that pervades every aspect of life on board. The two vessels—the fleet is poised to expand to six by 2028—are deliberately kept small and ultra-exclusive, accommodating a maximum of 900 guests and approximately 650 crew members.

No megaliners, no mass-market products. Instead, suites start at 35 m² and each comes with a balcony and thoughtful amenities such as heated marble bathroom floors. In every other respect as well, the interiors of both private and public spaces call to mind stylish design hotels rather than classic luxury cruise ships. Nine restaurants—spanning Mediterranean to Japanese—are included in the cruise fare, as are select beverages. The philosophy is simple: once you have booked, you can completely let go and surrender to relaxation. What further distinguishes this concept from traditional cruise lines is the considered pace of travel. Explora Journeys selects its itineraries so that the ship often remains in port overnight, affording guests the opportunity to spend the evening ashore instead of on board. Should you wish to experience it yourself, the Explora I and Explora II will sail this summer among the Greek islands and along the French Riviera, among other destinations. So the next time you desire breakfast in Portofino or an evening glass of wine in Mykonos, you will no longer need to search for a hotel room…
