With the new fathom cruise brand, US shipping giant Carnival is offering "socially responsible cruises" for the first time. The aim is to "build a long-term, systematic partnership with countries and destinations that will benefit economically, socially and environmentally from this type of cruising. Passengers should have the opportunity to do good and make the world a better place through their commitment during the trip." The first voyage on the Adonia, which was chartered especially for this purpose, will take passengers to the Dominican Republic, where they can help cultivate cocoa plants or teach English in schools, among other things. The duration of the activities ranges from a few hours to several days.
Honest commitment or overdue image polishing? Hard to say. What is certain is that Carnival has been criticized for years for poor working conditions on board and extremely lax environmental protection regulations ...
