Focus on environmental protection

Carnival Cruise Line is pressing ahead with plans for the first ships in its fleet to be powered exclusively by liquefied natural gas. The shipping company has now signed an agreement with the oil and natural gas company Shell to supply two newbuilds with LNG (liquefied natural gas). The as yet unnamed cruisers, each with a capacity of 5,200 passengers, are due to enter service in 2020 and 2022 respectively and will be stationed in North America. Thanks to the consistent use of LNG, pollution levels at sea and in ports will be significantly reduced. In order to ensure the supply of the more environmentally friendly fuel at all times, Shell is planning to build a seagoing bunker barge to refuel ships with LNG along the US East Coast. It is the first project of its kind in the USA.
