Explora on course for expansion

All good things come in threes - according to this motto, Explora Journeys not only celebrated the undocking of the Explora III on July 14, but also the coin ceremony of the Explora IV and the steel cutting of the Explora V. The Connoisseur Circle was present at the impressive ceremony at the Fincantieri shipyard in Genoa Sestri Ponente.

The weather gods didn't mean well for Liguria at the start of the week. A Sunday with thunderstorms and heavy rain was followed by a cloudy Monday with hot and humid temperatures. The fact that the Fincantieri shipyard was nevertheless bathed in sunshine on July 14 this year was due to a very special event that is rare even in the fast-growing cruise industry: No fewer than three new members of the Explora fleet had to be welcomed on this day. Or, in the words of Anna Nash, President of Explora Journeys: "Today is a proud moment for us as we celebrate three outstanding ships - each one a symbol of our commitment to redefine ultra-elegant travel at sea. This triple celebration illustrates the power of our vision and the close collaboration with our partners at Fincantieri and the continued support of the Aponte-Vago family. Guided by our values of care, respect and excellence, we are not just building ships, we are creating a lasting legacy of transformative voyages for generations to come."






The Explora III is due to set sail as early as next year. What sets her apart from her two "older sisters" - the Explora I and II, which have been sailing the world's oceans since 2022 and -24 respectively - is an increase in public areas, but above all in suites in the higher Ocean Penthouse and Ocean Residences categories. In addition, there are numerous further developments and adaptations, both in terms of the interior and the on-board facilities.






Like its two successors, the Explora IV and IV, whose maiden voyages are planned for 2027 and 2028 respectively, the Explora III will also be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), a transitional fuel that produces significantly lower emissions than conventional marine diesel.
In addition, all three new vessels can be equipped with next-generation fuel cell technology. This can convert LNG into hydrogen and thus drastically reduce emissions. According to Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of the Cruise Division of the MSC Group, the aim is to exploit the greatest possible potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, decarbonize maritime operations and reduce the ecological footprint.
With these green cruising measures, Explora Journeys also aims to appeal to a younger, design- and lifestyle-oriented clientele that has previously avoided cruises for sustainability reasons, among others.






Voyages on board the Explora III and IV can already be booked today. Both ships are starting their first season with Nordland voyages. The Explora III will then spend the winter of 2026/27 in the Caribbean and will then travel along the American west coast up to Alaska. Where the Explora IV will be heading from fall 2027 is as yet unknown, as are the premiere routes of the Explora V. So we can remain curious and wish all three ships a handful of water under their keels at all times.
